GATE CITY, Va. — Nancy Ervin Dempsey departed this life Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2014.
She was born Dec. 10, 1945, to Claude and Marie Williams Ervin of Gate City, Va. Nancy graduated Gate City High School and Johnston Memorial in Abingdon. She was employed by Holston Valley hospital, where she served as the Clinical Leader for CICU. After serving at HVMC, Nancy signed on as a traveling nurse for many years until failing health ended her nursing career. Nancy had a big heart and a deep love for her family and many dear friends. She enjoyed traveling, watching Virginia Tech football and good conversation.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and older sister, Linda Starnes.
Survivors include her son, Michael Dempsey; brother and sister-in-law, Bob and Linda Ervin; niece, Marie Starnes; nephews, Rob (Rebecca) Starnes, Kenneth Ervin, John Gillenwater and Steven Gillenwater; great-nephews, Christopher Starnes and Tommy Starnes; and great-nieces, Katie Starnes and Lindsay Starnes. Nancy also had many extended family members and friends she greatly cherished. One special friend, Carol Malone, was like a sister to her; Brandi Tipton was loved by her like a daughter; and Travis Keith was like a second son.
A memorial celebration will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday at Ewing Chapel behind Community Fellowship Baptist Church in Gate City.
The family requests no flowers; however, memorial contributions may be made to Gate City Funeral Home to defer expenses.
Gate City Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
