GREELY JOHN CHAPMAN GREELY Entered into eternal rest on the evening of March 4, 2010, John Chapman Greely, husband of Jane Grimball Greely. Residence, Charleston, SC. The relatives and friends of Mr. and Mrs. Greely are invited to attend the memorial services of the former Sunday, March 14, 2010 at 2 p.m. in Grace Episcopal Church. Mr. Greely was born January 3, 1924 in Washington, DC, the son of the late General John Nesmith Greely and the late Marian Chapman Greely. He attended St. Albans School, Washington, DC and graduated from Porter Military Academy in 1942 in Charleston, SC. He attended The Citadel, served in the Philippines and Japan and then graduated from Georgetown School of Foreign Service in 1947. Mr. Greely was a career officer in the clandestine service of the CIA. He served in Tokyo, Japan, and Lausanne, Switzerland ended his career as the Chief Operations Officer of Africa Division in 1973. While in Switzerland, Mr. Greely founded the Commonwealth American Primary School. Upon his retirement the family moved back to Charleston where he worked at the family business, The Smockery. He was a member of the Chevy Chase Club, Lansdowne Club of London, Carolina Yacht Club, The Rotary Club, South Conway Club (NH), Piping and Marching Society of Lower Chalmers Street. He is survived by his wife of sixty-five years of Charleston, SC; five children: Marian Chapman Greely of Charleston, SC, Jane Greely Cowan of Charleston, SC, John G. Greely of Leonardtown, MD, Alice Delancey Greely Nelson of Baltimore, MD, and Rose Greely Rosenbaum of Falmouth Maine; ten grandchildren: David and Chapman Knott, Jennie and George Cowan, Delancey and Andrew Nelson, John and Elizabeth Greely, Annabel and Ben Rosenbaum. Memorials may be made to The Hospice of Charleston Foundation, 676 Wando Park Blvd., Mt. Pleasant, SC 29464 or Grace Episcopal Church-Saving Grace Project, 115 Wentworth St., Charleston, SC 29401.
