Wells Sawyer was born in Iowa to Moses and Helen Sawyer and though originally studying law and working in the banking field, he soon became known in the world of painting. He started in illustrations for newspapers such as the Chicago Tribune. He moved to Washington D.C. and worked as an illustrator for the government and the Geological Survey Office. He studied at the Corcoran School of the Arts and the Washington Art Students League, also exhibiting at the Chicago Art Institute. He started working in 1896-1897 as an artist and photographer for an archaeological expedition in the Key West and Marco Island area of Florida. He also worked for the Treasury Department and in the National City Bank of New York, while pursuing his art field in his "spare time".
He married in 1896 and in 1900 his wife Kathleen gave birth to his daughter, Helen Alton Sawyer who became an artist in her own right. They also had a son, Bailey Sawyer.
He was primarily known for his landscape art and showed at many art galleries including the Smithsonian Institute and Natural Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., and many others.
Wells retired in 1926 due to health issues and moved to Spain with his wife and traveled. But he began to sketch more and had many more exhibitions. He and his wife made a final move to Sarasota, Florida in 1944 and continued to show his work worldwide.
He died in Sarasota, Florida in 1960 at the age of 97.
