Harold was born on September 10, 1924, in Bolivar, Mo., to the late Harold Sr. and Helen (Kirkpatrick) Townsend.
He grew up in Orrick, Mo. and graduated from the University of Missouri with a degree in engineering. He worked throughout Northwest Missouri for over 30 years as an engineer for the U.S. Soil Conservation Department.
Harold proudly served in the U.S. Army during WW II and the Korean Conflict. He was a member of and a very active volunteer at the First Christian Church. He enjoyed gardening and woodworking.
On March 19, 1953, he married Wava Thrasher. Together, they enjoyed 62 years of marriage.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Robinson and Jenny Whitsitt; son-in-law, Kenny Howard; and great-granddaughter, Olivia Miller.
Surviving family include his wife, Wava Townsend of the home; two daughters, Debra Howard, St. Joseph and Susan Arrow (Alan), Houston, Texas; son, Mark Townsend (Sue), Wilmington, N.C.; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; siblings, Ada Andrews, John Townsend, Charles Townsend; numerous nieces and nephews.
Graveside Service: 2 p.m. Tuesday, at South Point Cemetery in Orrick, Mo.
The Family has requested Memorials, in lieu of flowers, be made to Camp Quality of NWMO or the American Cancer Society. As published in the St. Joseph News-Press.
