Calgary Couple Lose Lives, Son Injured in Car Crash
Hank Bassen's Parents Die In Truck Collision On Icy, Fog-Bound Road
The parents of a former Calgary hockey star, goal-tender Hank Bassen, are dead, and a brother is in serious condition following a highway accident Saturday afternoon.

Dead are Mr. and Mrs. Henry Bassen, 219 15th Ave. N.E., whose son, Dick, 15, is in Holy Cross hospital with severe head and leg injuries.

The Bassens were killed when a car driven by Mr. Bassen, 50,, skidded on a fog-bound, icy highway 20 miles south of Calgary and was rammed broadside by a huge semi-trailer truck...

Following the accident Hank Bassen (who played goal for Calgary Stampeders hockey club last season) was notified and flew to Calgary after a hockey game in New Westminster. He is presently goaltender for the Seattle Americans hockey team of the Western Hockey League.

Eye-witnesses to the accident said the mishap occurred when Mr. Bassen pulled out to pass a snow-plow on No. 2 highway and lost control of his car on the icy pavement...

The Bassen's are survived by sons Henry (Hank), Dick and Herbert.

Mr. Bassen was born and educated in Hanover, Germany. He came to Canada in 1930, living in Wolsley, Sask., before moving to Calgary. He married Mrs. Bassen, a native of Austria, here in 1932. They celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary this year.

Mr. Bassen was employed by Calgary Packers as a butcher.
