Benjamin Chaplain Walton or Uncle Chap as he was affectionately called was born August 5, 1862 at Omaha, Nebraska. He never married but lived at the old home in Woodruff with his brother James and wife Miranda. Chap was elected assessor of Rich County. He homesteaded in Woodruff and engaged in farming and in the saw-mill business. He served his community and county in almost every capactiy. He was largely responsible for the early water storage reservoir. He was active in the Livestock Association, Irrigation Company and the Woodruff Grazing Company. He had one of the first threshers in Rich County. He loved horses and owned some fine ones. He loved sports and excelled in them, especially baseball. When the dreaded diseases, diptheria and scarlet fever took so many lives, he was always there helping with the sick and burying the dead which often had to be done at night. In appreciation the people of Woodruff gave him a watch on two different occasions. Upon his death, on September 14, 1934, the Irrigation Company presented members of his family with a resolution of condolence for his many years of faithful service.
