John was the son of John Rogers Sr. and Mary Groome, who were married 16 Sep. 1685 in Byberry, Philadelphia Co., PA. His father came to Burlington, NJ, with the original Quaker immigrants in 1678, and settled in Nottingham, old Burlington Co., West Jersey, a few years later. John Jr. is presumed to have been born in Nottingham (now Hamilton Twp., Mercer Co.).
Under his father's 1698 will, John Rogers Jr. was to be apprenticed as a blacksmith. He was referred to as such in Mar. 1716/17, when he sold his father's plantation in Nottingham to Robert Pearson Jr. He subsequently married Martha Clayton, who is presumed to be the mother of his nine known children.
He was living in New Windsor Twp., Middlesex Co., by 1735, when he was elected constable. He is referred to, later in life, as a yeoman and farmer. He died, presumably at his residence in Windsor (now Mercer Co.), sometime between 6 Jan. 1769, when he made his will, and 10 Apr. 1776, when it was probated. If he survived to 1776, then he was 89 years old at death.
Note: John's son John Rogers III, in his 1792 will, directed the completion of the stone wall around his burying ground. This was located in present-day Mercer County Park, West Windsor Twp. It is possible that other Rogers family members were buried here besides John III and his wife (who left no surviving children). This might include John Rogers Jr. and wife Martha, who lived in Windsor Twp.
