William R. (Bill) Morgan passed away on June 21, 2014, at Central Washington Hospital. He was 82.
Bill was the youngest of five children born to Harry S. and Daisy (Lyon) Morgan on March 8, 1932. He was raised in Winthrop, where he graduated from Winthrop High School in 1950. He played baseball, basketball and football while attending school. He developed a love for those sports. He watched his grandsons' sporting events with pride, rarely missing a game. He was a Mariners and Seahawks fan.
In 1951 he joined the U.S. Navy. It was during the Korean War, but he spent his entire Navy tour in the Atlantic, stationed out of Norfolk, Virginia. His ship stopped at many ports from the northern to the southern Atlantic — an eye-opener to a farm boy from the Methow. He was honorably discharged in 1954.
In 1955, he met Patricia Thompson, who was out here from Iowa for the summer to work at her parents' auto shop and gas station, now the Mt. Gardner Inn. They married on June 10, 1956, in Winthrop. They made Winthrop their home and raised their four children there.
Bill worked at the Wagner Mill for 17 years. He left the mill to work for Raleigh Shrirer. He was on the crew that constructed the Klipchuck campground on Highway 20. Bill then went to work for Lloyd Logging, where he was on the tree felling crew. In 1971, Bill was hired on at the Winthrop Ranger District to work in the recreation department. He worked there for the next 10 years. The Town of Winthrop hired Bill as the maintenance foreman in 1982.
After he retired from the Town of Winthrop, Bill and Pat began making annual summer drives to Alaska. He truly loved the drive to Alaska, taking many pictures along the way. He enjoyed sharing his pictures and telling many stories of their adventures. This summer would have been his 19th trip. He was six days away from starting this year's trip. Bill also enjoyed gardening. He raised many vegetables and fruits that he shared with many.
Bill is survived by daughter Connie Sonnichsen (Howard) of Twisp; son Dave Morgan (Julie) of Hamilton, Washington; son Steve Morgan (Cheryl) of Kenai, Alaska; and three grandsons, Peter, Daniel and James.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Pat; his parents; brother Chuck Morgan; sisters Leta Petit, Lois Badger and Helen Larson; and son Don Morgan.
A graveside memorial service will be held at Sullivan Cemetery in Winthrop on Aug. 9 at 11:30 a.m.
