Ray Bishop, 97, passed away peacefully in Birchwood Terrace on November 25, 2014. Born September. 14, 1917, in Limestone, Maine, he was the son of Amos and Anna (Cyr) Bishop.

He was raised in Aroostook County, Maine, and graduated from Caribou High School in 1936. Upon graduation he enlisted in the Army and was stationed at Fort Ethan Allen. He later served in the Army Air Corps during WWII, seeing action in Italy. He married Ruth Evelyn Alden on April 14, 1940, in Montpelier. They were married 74 years prior to Ruth's passing in July 2014. He had a variety of talents and many jobs over the years: bus driver, cab operator, service station owner, long distance trucker, short order cook, mechanic and engineering tech. An inveterate tinkerer, he never met a machine or engine that he couldn't fix. He had a pilot's license and a Master Electrician's license. He and several friends owned the first glider in Vermont and enjoyed flying it all over Vermont. He drove a Shrine clown car in parades to the delight of children in the crowds. He was a 50+ year member of the Masons, Scottish Rite, Shriners and Order of the Eastern Star. Upon retirement from IBM in 1982, he worked tirelessly advocating for crippled children and getting services for them from the Shriners Hospitals for Crippled Children. He volunteered for over 20 years at the Vermont Civil Air Patrol where he ran the supply room and helped out whenever and wherever he was needed. He proudly achieved the rank of lieutenant colonel for his efforts.

He is survived by his son, Robert Bishop of South Burlington; his daughter, Janet Magina and her husband, Robert, of Plainville, MA; four grandsons, Kent Lavalla of Barnstead, NH, Brett Lavalla of San Carlos, CA, Michael Magina of Middleboro, MA, and Craig Magina of Attleboro, MA; two great- grandchildren; two sisters, Delvina Patterson of PawPaw, WV, and Margaret LaPointe of Broken Aero, Ok; plus many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents; his wife, Ruth; his daughter, Louise; two brothers, Mack Bishop and Fred Bishop; and a sister, Winifred Sirkus.
