She was predeceased by her husband Donald Campbell Mead, Jr. and a son, Douglas Ferguson Mead.
She is survived by a son Andrew and his wife Kelly of Bangor, and their children, Sarah and Andrew, Jr., a son Evan of Bangkok, Thailand, a sister Murray MacDonald and a niece Jacquelin Hellenberg of Clinton, Connecticut.
Dene grew up in Rumford, a small mill town in western Maine. She graduated from the University of Maine and moved to New York City where she worked as a writer for the Merrill Lynch Investor's Reader. Dene married Don in 1950 and moved to Ridgewood, New Jersey, where she was active in volunteer organizations, serving as president of the PTA, the College Club, and the Women's Club. When Don's employer (Western Electric Company) transferred its corporate headquarters to North Carolina, Dene and Don relocated to Greensboro where Dene again was active in volunteer organizations including the Weatherspoon Art Gallery, the Greensboro Opera League, and the Symphony Guild. She also participated in activities at the Sedgefield Country Club, and particularly enjoyed dining with the Tuesday night ladies group.
After Don's death in 1981, Dene traveled extensively and enjoyed trips organized by Joe and Betty Mullin. Dene was a dedicated member of the First Presbyterian Church and faithfully attended the Sunday adult classes and groups. Dene was a gentle soul who enjoyed being with people. She valued the many friendships she established while attending the University of Maine in the 1940s, and later while living in Ridgewood and Greensboro.
The family would like to express their deep gratitude to the caregivers at Engel Place, the Sylvia Ross Home, and Ross Manor for the compassionate and considerate care during Dene's later years. A private service for family will be held at the Waterside Cemetery in Marblehead, Massachusetts later in the spring.
