Ruth Anna Mason was the fifth child in a family of seven. She was born December 1, 1891, to Fredrick Wilford and Christine Emily Swenson Mason at the old family home in Springville, Utah. When she was four or five years old, she became very ill and her mother called a brother who had a wonderful gift of healing to administer to her. The pain left almost immediately and she was soon better.
After graduation from high school at Springville, Ruth entered the University of Utah for summer school. That fall she accepted a teaching position at Torrey, Wayne County, Utah. While there she stayed part of the time with one of the daughters of John D. Lee. The following summer of 1913, she again attended the University of Utah. She then accepted a teaching position at Cedarfort, Rush Valley, Utah County. She and another lady taught all eight grades. She attending Brigham Young University during the summer of 1914 and again daughter at Cederfort during the years of 1914 and 1915. In the summer of 1916, she worked for a lady in Salt Lake City and accepted the teaching position that fall at Woodruff. She received $65 per month salary and $30 per month for board and room.
She married Leonard Longhurst of Woodruff, Utah on September 6, 1917 in the Salt Lake Temple.
Leonard and Ruth had six children, four girls; Georgia, Preal, June and Faye and two boys: Fred William and Robert Max. They were raised at the family home in Woodruff.
In May of 1941, tragedy struck the family when Ruth became ill with tick fever (tularemia) and on May 22, she passed away.
