Evelyn Lois (Babcock) Wiley was born in Denver, CO on July 14, 1912 to Berton H. & Arvella M. Babcock. “Lois” was just a few months old when her family moved to Stuart, FL. She lived all her life in Stuart, and died there on October 5, 1983 at the age of 71.
She attended public schools in Stuart and Miss Harris’ School for Girls in Miami. At the age of 16, she took flying lessons and soloed in a Jenny biplane. In 1934, Lois Babcock married Russell Wiley, also of Stuart, and they had three sons, James, Joseph, and Jerome. They were also parents of foster daughters, twins Jeanne and Joanne.
Lois & Russell had a very full and active life together. They established and operated several successful businesses in Stuart over the years, including Wiley Motors & Garage, a Lindsay Water Softener franchise, and later Golden Gate Moving & Storage. They worked together in those operations and in their spare time, they enjoyed boating, fishing, and being on the water.
Mrs. Wiley was a nurse volunteer at Martin Memorial Hospital in the 1940s. She was a member of the Stuart Garden Club, Women’s Club, First Presbyterian Church, and was an avid supporter of her children’s activities and sporting events. She was an accomplished pianist and excellent cook.
Funeral services were held on October 8, 1983 at Johns Funeral Home Chapel in Stuart. Survivors include sons Jim, Joe and Jerry Wiley; daughter Jeanne Connors; granddaughters Barbie, Amy, Connie, and Cindy Wiley, and Debbie Bruno; niece Susan Johnson; and cousin Grace Clonts. Evelyn Lois Wiley is buried alongside her husband Russell at Fernhill Cemetery in Stuart.
