Leroy John Douglas, age 77, of Brooker, Florida passed away on February 22, 2015 at E.T. York Care Center in Gainesville. He was born in Branford, FL on December 23, 1937 to the late John Douglas and Ervie Harring Douglas. Leroy met the love of his life, Gladys Marie Simmons, in Palatka and they were married on August 4, 1964 in Folkston, GA. Shortly after their marriage, Leroy and Gladys relocated to New York where Leroy was employed as a Maintenance Associate in a shoe factory for many years and later they moved to Columbia City, Indiana before finally settling down in Brooker, FL to be close to his family. He was passionate about singing, playing his guitar, and fishing. He taught his daughter and nephew how to play guitar and assisted many people to better their music careers. After Leroy retired, he enjoyed helping people maintain their lawns by mowing. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Geraldine Powell; and his brother, Robert Douglas.
Leroy is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Gladys Marie Douglas of Brooker, FL; his daughters, Sandra Lynn (Michael) Thurston of Athens, PA and Diane Carpenter (Phil) of Burdette, NY; his sister, Merline Hawthorn of Salisbury, NC; his 2 grandsons, Nick Dwello and Chad Thurston; his 2 great granddaughters, Harley and McKenzie Thurston; and several nieces and nephews.
