Emma Twiggs Mason was born 17 October 1836 at Fort Des Moines No. 1 (1834–1837), Montrose, (7 Dec 1836 Lee County), Wisconsin Territory (4 Jul 1838 Iowa Territory), USA. Daughter of Richard Barnes Mason, career U.S. Army officer and 5th military governor of the California territory, and Elizabeth Margaret Hunter. Emma married Francis "Frank" Wheaton, also a career U.S. Army officer, on 11 November 1861 in the City of Saint Louis, Missouri.
