A horse trainer prior to enlisting in the Australian Imperial Force on 27 August 1914, he embarked from Melbourne for active service abroad on 20 October 1914 aboard HMAT "Southern" (A27). He died of disease in the No. 1 Australian Auxiliary Hospital, Harefield Park, Harefield, Middlesex, England, aged 38 years.
