Born in Buncombe County, he was the son of the late James A. Garfield Davey, Sr. and Jeannette Crockett Davey. Growing up in Fletcher, Jim attended Henderson County Schools.
In 1956, the family moved to Hendersonville where Jim graduated from Hendersonville High School in 1957. He attended Clemson University, earning a BS degree in 1961, and entered the US Navy in 1962, commissioned as an Ensign, US Naval Reserve, serving two deployments aboard USS Galveston (CLG-3) to Vietnam. After a subsequent tour as a recruiter, Jim graduated from the University of Florida with a Juris Doctorate. He then returned to active duty in the Judge Advocate General's Corps, US Navy.
Proudly serving in Charleston, SC, Norfolk, VA, Yokosuka, Japan, and San Francisco, CA, as a military judge, he retired from service in 1989 after a tour as Commanding Officer of the Naval Legal Service Office, Corpus Christi, Texas, at the rank of Captain, Judge Advocate General's Corps, US Navy.
Captain Davey then pursued a second career of ten years as a prosecutor for the Florida Bar in Tallahassee, FL, as Assistant Discipline Counsel. After retiring in 2012, he and Darlene returned to the mountains he so dearly loved.
Jim and Darlene attended Hendersonville First Presbyterian Church. His greatest joys in life were his relationship with God, visiting with his family and friends, and pulling for Clemson. He dearly loved all animals, especially his dog, Rusty.
