Gerald Lee Warren is no longer a resident of the Mississippi State Veterans Home in Jackson, Mississippi. After dealing with dementia for several years, he checked out in the early morning hours of April 20, 2015. It is rumored that he has gone to a place where the fish always bite and where he can spend more time with his brothers, Jack Preston, Horace Davis, Gene Austin, and Tommy Joe Warren, as well as his baby sister, Vera Elizabeth, and his infant brother.
Born on September 7, 1938 in Forest, Mississippi to Virgie Myers Warren and Deloss Warren, Gerald spent his childhood in much the same way as many children in rural 1940’s Scott County did—working the fields.
After graduating from Ringgold High School in 1957, he joined the army. He was stationed in Vicenza, Italy and later in Fort Sill, Oklahoma. After completing his military service, he moved back to Mississippi and eventually settled with his family in Pearl.
When he wasn’t fishing, he worked in sales for various companies—including Southern Life and Health Insurance. After the Easter flood of 1979, he traded his suit and tie for coveralls and a toolbox to start Metro Fixit, a home appliance repair service. He eventually bought and maintained several rental properties in the Pearl area.
Gerald had a unique way with words and could be both tender-hearted and tough. He had a passion for fishing, fixing old clocks, and smoking turkeys for the holidays.
His oldest daughter, Barbara Warren Madden, lives in Missouri with her husband Stirling. Her children, Gerald’s four grandchildren, Andrew, Clara, Timothy, and Anna Katherine Madden are pretty much grown and making their lives in Louisiana and Missouri. Christina Warren, his middle child, lives with her husband, Lars Deutschlaender, in Switzerland as does his son, Christopher Warren.
The family would like to thank the staff at the VA Home for taking care of their father while he was a resident there. They would also like to express their gratitude to all those who visited him while he was in the home, especially his two sisters, Edna Warren (whom he nicknamed Sally) and Shirley Warren Beaver (whom he nicknamed Poochie). A special expression of gratitude is extended to Nita Garrett for her friendship with their father, for all she did for him before he became ill, and for all she did for him thereafter.
A memorial service will be held at the Ott and Lee Funeral Home chapel in Brandon, MS.
