Irene Tobin Stevens, age 90 of Huron, died Wednesday, April 27, 2011, at Huron SunQuest Healthcare Center.

Her funeral service will be 2:00 p.m. Monday, May 2, at Holy Trinity Catholic Parish with burial at Broadland Cemetery.

Visitation will be Sunday from 1-8 p.m. at Welter Funeral Home with family present from 6-8 p.m. and a Prayer Service at 6:00 p.m.; or Monday afternoon one hour prior to the service at the church.

Irene Stevens was born Irene Mortimer, daughter of L.D. and Leah (Payne) Mortimer, on May 25, 1920, on the family farm near Hitchcock, SD. She attended elementary school in Pleasant View Township, graduated from Hitchcock High School in 1936, and received a B.S. degree in education in 1971 from Northern State College in Aberdeen.

On January 27, 1940, Irene married Fred Tobin in Wessington Springs, SD. Fred died on November 14, 1971.

She lived in Huron for nine years; Hitchcock for thirty-three years; and Lake Preston for eleven years. She taught country school for eight years, five years at Bonilla School, two years at Broadland School, and twenty years at Hitchcock school.

Irene had many interests but especially enjoyed dancing, reading and gardening. She valued the time that she could spend with her grandchildren. Irene was famous for her candy making (fudge, peanut brittle, and caramel) that she shared with her family and many friends. She was also known for her home-made bread.

She is survived by five children, Elaine Tobin of Huron, SD, Colette (Dave) Schmidtke of Charles City, IA, Thomas (Sharlyn) Tobin of Aberdeen, Jay (Kristin) Tobin of Aberdeen, and Lori Tobin of Sioux Falls, SD; seven grandchildren, Matthew (Tara) Tobin, Michael (Katie) Tobin, Marc (Amy) Tobin, Alexander (Caitlin) Tobin, Lauren Tobin, Kasey Jo Tobin, Reese Tobin, Evan Schmidtke, and Tim Schmidtke; nine great grandchildren; one step-great grandchild; three great grandchildren to be born in 2011; one brother, Jim Mortimer of Hitchcock; one sister, Annette (Art) Olsen of Hitchcock; one brother-in-law, Joseph (Audrey) Tobin of Racine, WI; many nieces and nephews.

Irene was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Fred Tobin in 1971; one daughter, Lynn Tobin in 1992; two sons, Timothy Tobin in 1973 and Loren Tobin 1978; and 4 brothers.
