R. Lorraine Pedersen, age 91, of Hutchinson, passed away Sunday, May 3, 2015, at Cedar Crest Estates of Silver Lake.
She was born Aug. 11, 1923, in Hamburg, the daughter of Soren and Ellen (Asp) Pedersen. Lorraine grew up in the Lamson community; where she was raised by her grandparents, John and Karoline Asp.
Lorraine was baptized as an infant at the Stockholm Lutheran Church in Cokato; and was later confirmed as a youth at the Lamson Evangelical Free Church in Lamson.
She attended school in Dassel, and was a graduate of the Dassel High School class of 1942. Lorraine furthered her education by attending Normal Teachers Training in Hutchinson, and took extension courses at St. Cloud Teacher’s College.
She taught elementary school in Meeker and McLeod counties, and then moved to Chicago, IL, where she attended Trinity College and graduated in 1949.
Lorraine enlisted in the United States Air Force Reserves April 27, 1957, and received basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, TX. She served her country as a reservist for 26 years, and was called to active duty during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Lorraine achieved the rank of technical sergeant and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, and the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal and the Air Reserve Meritorious Service Medal. Lorraine received an honorable discharge Aug. 11, 1983.
Lorraine held employment for Michigan Bell in Detroit, MI for 37.5 years, until she retired in 1989.
She moved to Hutchinson in 1991.
Lorraine loved traveling, taking pictures, going to movies, and stamp collecting. She was an avid reader, enjoyed history and researching genealogy. Lorraine was working on the genealogy of her family, and also the Lamson community. She enjoyed helping people and spending time with family and friends.
When Lorraine needed assistance with her daily care, she became a resident of Cedar Crest Estates of Hutchinson, May 8, 2006. She moved to Cedar Crest Estates of Silver Lake Jan. 13 of this year.
Lorraine is survived by her sisters, Shirley Bowen and her husband, Bob, and Ruth Hardel, all of Hutchinson; nieces, nephews, and many other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Soren and Ellen Pedersen; brothers Norman Pedersen, Elmer Pedersen and his wife, Lillian, Kenneth Robert Carl Pedersen and his wife, Deanna, Stanley Pedersen and his wife, Denise, Kenneth Robert Pedersen (in infancy), and one infant brother; sisters Myrtle Buckentin and her husband, Albert, Signe Smith and her husband, Ray, Mary Zumberge, Arlene Buck and her husband, Harold, Bernice MacDonald and her husband, Ward, and one infant sister; and brother-in-law Gilbert Hardel.
Funeral services took place Thursday, May 7 at 11 a.m. at the Lamson Evangelical Free Church in Dassel, followed by interment in the Oakland Cemetery in Hutchinson. Pastor Joshua Hutchcraft officiated, and the organist was Kathy Mattson. Soloist: Brenda Rydberg sang “In The Garden,” accompaniment by pianist Edythe Gravley. Congregational hymns were “Beyond The Sunset,” “Whispering Hope,” and “Shall We Gather At The River.”
Casket bearers were Bob Pedersen, Wayne Pedersen, Ron Smith, Randy Smith, Bob Smith, Steve Hardel, Jerry Buck, and David Pedersen.
Military honors were provided by the Hutchinson Memorial Rifle Squad.
