Mrs. Eva Loretta Mathews, 86, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April, 21, 2015. She born July 12, 1928 in Jacksonville, Florida and was the first and only child born to Elijah and Annie Givins.

Graveside service is scheduled for 12 Noon, Tuesday, April 28, 2015 at Chapel Hills Memory Gardens, 850 St. Johns Bluff Road, North, Jacksonville, Florida 32225. Repast immediately following in main center's Event Room.

She matriculated in the public schools of Duval County and graduated from Stanton High School in 1946.

She entered into a courtship which culminated in her marriage to James Franklin Mathews, Sr. in 1951 and relocated to Jacksonville Beach, Florida. The marriage resulted in the birth of two sons, James II and Steven Anthony. She was joined in marriage for 44 years until the passing of her husband in 1995.

She was an active homemaker, raising her sons and participating in community work. She was also an active and faithful member of Second Missionary Baptist Church at Jacksonville Beach and upon arriving in Tallahassee in 1999, she joined Bethel Missionary Baptist Church.

She was a long time member of the local Pallbearers Lodge #222 (Jacksonville Beach) where she served as Secretary for many years. She was an active supporter of education through participation in parent teacher organizations and other community support groups.

She is survived by two devoted sons, James II (Joyce), Steven Anthony (Marcie); three grandchildren, James III (Xamondria), Steven (Leslie), Marissa; three great-grandchildren, Jaleya, Jade, Mariah; one sister-in-law, Elizabeth Ballard (Jacksonville Beach); nieces, nephews and sorrowing friends.
She had a special kinship to the The Bethel Towers Family and a fellow resident, Mrs. Willie Mae Fedd.

Viewing is today from 3:00 to 5:00 P.M. at the funeral home and Monday, April 27, 2015 from 10:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Building Fund at Bethel Missionary Baptist Church, 224 N. MLK Blvd., Tallahassee, FL 32301.
