Carson, Joseph 82 Sept. 18, 1932 April 18, 2015 Joe Carson was born in Kansas, the youngest of six children to Josie and Herbert Carson. The family moved to Toledo, Ore., when he was 3 years old to escape the Dust Bowl. He started work at Woodsen's Auto Dealership and Garage in Toledo when he was 14 years old, developing a passion for cars and earning money for college. Joe attended Willamette University for two years and then transferred to Oregon State University. He was affiliated with Delta Upsilon and participated in ROTC. After graduating, he served in the U.S. Air Force and U.S. Air National Guard as a pilot. Later, he taught school at Binnsmead Elementary School in Portland. That is where he met Carol Moss. They married in 1965 and had their son, Joel, in 1973. After teaching for six years, Joe worked in the jewelry business for 10 years. In 1977, he opened the Elmer's Restaurant in Clackamas. Joe is survived by his wife, Carol; son, Joel (Kitling Lum); granddaughters, Sydney and Stella; and sisters, Eileen Smallbeck and Velda Miller.
