Esther Marie (Greene) Stephens was born March 29. 1925 in Waterloo, Iowa, daughter of John and Emo (Alder) Greene. She worked a variety of jobs in factories and medical facilities. Esther was a kind woman with a special place in her heart for individuals with mental handicaps.
When she was in her early 50s Esther received her GED and, then, attended Hawkeye Tech and received a degree to be a licensed practical nurse. She worked at Black Hawk County Country View Care Center until her retirement in 1988.
Despite her small stature, Esther was a strong woman having survived Neuralgia and Breast Cancer! In her later years she enjoyed sitting on her front porch, watching birds and animals and greeting children going to and from school.
Esther passed away on Sunday, April 3, 2015 at Cedar Valley Hospice Home at the age of 90 of natural causes.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Virginia (in infancy) and LaVona Schrage; and one brother, John I. Greene.
She is survived by two sons, D. Mike Dietz and Duane Grandon both of Waterloo; a daughter, Diane (Paul) Wilson of Cedar Falls and her faithful canine companion of fifteen years, Julio; three granddaughters, Teresa Burt, Heidi (Philip Barth) Grandon and Heather (Rob) Quail; eight great-grandchildren and one great-great granddaughter.
