Suggested edit: Published in the Piscataquis (ME) Observer 17 Jul 1879 p2: "OBITUARY---Died, in East Vassalboro, July 8th, Mr. Daniel Gardiner, aged 79 years, Mr. Gardiner was born in China, Maine, June 28th, 1800. When 23 years of age he went to Sebec, where he afterwards bought a tract of land, the most of which was, at this time a dense forest, though when sold, only a few weeks previous to his death, comprised his homestead farm, and on which he lived 55 years. About the year 1830 he was married to Miss Betsey Livermore, with whom he lived until her decease in 1875. Soon after her decease he married a second wife, Miss R. L. Stanchfield of Milo, who he also buried only 4 months previous to his death.

Mr. Gardiner had been the father of eleven children, only five of whom survived him, having lost two sons in the rebellion fighting for their country. Quite early in life he experienced religion and united with the Christian church, of Sebec, to which faith he adhered at [sic] long as he lived. His political views, had been for many years, in favor of the Republican party.

Mr. Gardiner was a very hard working man; he was always busy in both summer and winter---farming in summer and horse-teaming in winter---taking care of his farm and doing most his work himself, until about six months ago, since which time his health has been slowly failing; he knew that he must soon go to meet his reward. The last words he said, were: 'I want nothing but death, and that will soon come.' ?AW"
