Carl J. "Buster" Rice, of Sherman, Ill., died Saturday, May 2, 2015, at St. John's Hospice in Springfield.

He was born July 8, 1922, in Springfield, Ill., the son of Josephine Vignali and Carl Clifford Rice. He married Dorothy O. Solomon on Jan. 25, 1942, in Missouri.

Carl was a World War II veteran serving in the U.S. Army with General George Patton. He was employed by Fiat Allis Manufacturing for 33 years until his retirement. Carl was the first Mayor of Sherman, Ill., having a park erected in his honor. He was instrumental in establishing the Sherman Fire Department as well as the Sherman Athletic Club.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Josephine Woodard; stepfather, George Woodard; and sister, Juanita (Henry) Ackerman.

Carl is survived by his loving wife of 73 years, Dorothy; one son, Ronald ; two daughters, Carla and Georgia ; grandchildren: ; several great-grandchildren; two brothers, George and Terry and several nieces and nephews.

Burial will be at Camp Butler National Cemetery where military honors will be conducted.
