She was the daughter of John and Mary "Nellie" (nee McElhinney) McKelvey.
Barbara was a twin with her brother Hugh. Sadly Hugh died in 1873.
She emigrated to the United States along with some of her family.
At the age of 30, Barbara left Donegal for Pennsylvania aboard the ship, Ethiopia. She arrived on Wednesday, September 21, 1904 in the port of New York. She travelled alone and settled with her brother, William McKelvey.
Barbara was single and never married. She lived in Pennsylvania, and died at Bryn Mawr Hospital.
Barbara was buried in Holy Cross Cemetery in Yeadon, PA.
