Joseph Norman "Joe" Barnett, 88, of Summerville, widower of Annie Estelle Barnett, died Saturday, May 2, 2015, at Trident Medical Center.

Mr. Barnett was born March 20, 1927, in Russellville, SC, a son of the late John D. Barnett and Flossie Lambert Barnett.

He served in the United States Navy and retired from the Charleston Naval Shipyard. He was a past member of Masonic Lodge 365 in Dorchester, SC.

He was survived by a sister, Stella Barnett (I. V. ) Butler; a daughter, Norma Jean Spangler (Richard) of Manning, and a daughter, Margaret Thornberry (Clyde) of Saint Stephen; a stepson, Andrew C. "Bubba" Watkins (Dee) of Jacksonville, FL; several nieces and nephews; ten grandchildren; twenty-one great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and his special granddaughter and her family who took care of him for the last several years, Christina Simpson and her husband Scott, three great-grandchildren, Rebecca, Ashley, and Courtney Simpson, and great-great-granddaughter, Hadleigh Lynn Phelps.

He was predeceased by a stepson, Charles Henry "CH" Watkins; a stepdaughter, Dorothy Elizabeth "Dottie" Watkins Gatlin; two brothers, Samuel W. Barnette, and Richard "Red" Barnett; and two sisters, Anna Belle Barnett Stukes, and Sarah Ann Barnett Barnette Brinkley.

Funeral services were 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 6, 2015, in James A. Dyal Funeral Home Chapel, Summerville. Entombment followed in Carolina Memorial Park, North Charleston.

1. Norman said he was married three times. His first wife was Dorothy Stelling Watkins. His second marriage, to Elizabeth Byrd Hattaway, lasted about a year. His third wife was Annie Estelle, but he could not recall her maiden name.

2. After Norman and Elizabeth divorced, Elizabeth remarried her first husband, Henry Edward Hattaway.

3. Norman fathered a daughter, Norma Jean Barnett, by Dorothy. After Norman and Dorothy divorced, Dorothy married Charles M. Ackerman.
