He had an interesting career in the military during the Civil War serving in 4 regiments.

He first enlisted and was a Corporal in Tompkins' Battery of the 1st Rhode Island Light Artillery for a 3 month enlistment. He then enlisted as a bugler in the 3rd Rhode Island Heavy Artillery Co. M and also served as a Private.

He was commissioned on April 11, 1863 a 1st Lieutenant of the 54th Massachusetts Infantry Co. K. He served until mustering out for promotion into the 36th USCT Co. E on August 14, 1863. He served until August 14, 1866 when he was mustered out of the 36th USCT Co. C as Captain.
