Evelyn Janet Reeves was born on July 18, 1928 in Storm Lake, Iowa: the daughter of Clarence and Mabel (Allen) Baker. She graduated from East Waterloo High School with the class of 1947. Evelyn was united in marriage to Wintfred Reeves on June 30, 1951 in Waterloo; he preceded her in death on January 31, 1989.

She worked as a candy striper at St. Francis Hospital, was an elevator girl at the Russell Lamson Hotel and a candy counter sales girl at Black’s Department Store. Evelyn was hired in 1948 at Rath Packing and worked in the dry sausage department until 1984. She was the last female packing house employee to leave the building.

Evelyn worshipped diligently at her beloved St. Ansgar Lutheran Church. She was a wonderful mother, sister, aunt, daughter, grandmother and great-grandmother. Evelyn was known for her witty retorts, feisty attitude, easy smile and she was hard working and loyal to a fault.

After the death of her husband, Evelyn continued to open her home to her family. Many years were spent caring for her grandchildren. She lovingly showered them with her chocolate chip cookies and friendship. Evelyn was a wonderful cook, especially known for her chocolate chip cookies; macaroni salad, potato salad and Texas delight dessert.

Fred Schoepske was a very special companion to Evelyn for the last 14 years. They enjoyed visiting family, going out to eat and shopping. The family would like to thank Brenda Roth, who was a good friend and caregiver to Evelyn for the last year.

Evelyn passed away on Friday, May 1, 2015 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics from complications of uterine cancer, at the age of 86.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband; a granddaughter Nikki Mettlin; 4 brothers, Leslie, Earl, Fred and Wayne Baker and 2 sisters, Hazel Geary and Florence Greiman.

Evelyn is survived by 2 sons, Tim (Jennifer) Reeves of Pensacola, Florida and Brad Reeves (Noela Brody) of Copperas Cove, Texas; 2 daughters, Brenda (Larry) Gibbs of Garnavillo and Karen Mettlin of Waterloo; 13 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren and a sister Alice Leedom of Waterloo.
