Army Cpl. Corpuz was assigned to the 303rd Military Intelligence Battalion, 504th Military Intelligence Brigade, Fort Hood, Texas. Corpuz died from wounds sustained when his convoy came under enemy small arms fire and an improvised explosive device detonated during combat operations. Corpuz was a human-intelligence collector who was a detective and criminal investigator, an interpreter and translator. He spent time studying Arabic at the Defense Language Institute in Monterey. Bernard's family moved to Watsonville, California when he was a high school sophomore. He attended Palma High School in Salinas where he excelled in track. He graduated from Palma in 1995 and received an athletic scholarship to attend Hartnell College in Salinas, where he ran the 400-meter intermediate hurdles. He later transferred to the University of La Verne, a private college near Pomona from where he graduated in 2000. On "free-dress days" at Palma High School, Bernard used to wear Army fatigues and when he rode past the military surplus store he'd marvel at the old Army trucks and tell his teachers and friends that he really wanted to buy one and drive it to school. Because of his tremendous sense of honor and duty to country, no one was surprised when he ended up in the Army. Bernard had lots of friends and had a great sense of humor. Everything he got he worked for; he was a self made man.
