James died at his ranch in Garberville at the age of 80. He worked as a woodsman and rancher for over 30 years. He married Mabel Stansberry Marshall on May 4, 1932 in Grants Pass, Oregon, and she survived him.

He was a 50-year member of the Native Sons of the Golden West, Ferndale Parlor No.93, and a charter member of Garberville Grange No. 514.
