He was the great grandson of Joseph Griffin (1736-1781) who served in the Revolutionary War, marching from Methuen on April 19, 1775. Joseph was promoted to Sergeant in 1777.
Amos served in the Civil War era from Apr. 15, 1861 to Aug. 26, 1865. He first served in the 6th Regiment, Massachusetts Militia Infantry until Aug. 1861, and then he served with the Company F, 26 Regiment, Massachusetts Infantry. His brother Sylvanus enlisted in Company B, Massachusetts 1st Heavy Artillery. Sadly, Sylvanus was wounded in battle and died in 1864 at Washington, DC.
Amos married Mary A. Hewes, the daughter of Rev. William Hewes and Sophia Asbury Fuller on Apr. 5, 1866. They had three children, Ida, George and William.
Amos was a farmer in the Methuen area. He was also a teamster (1880 census) and later the Chief of Police (1900 census).
Amos died in 1924, at the age of 83.
