Craig Stephen Knoll died peacefully at his home on April 29, 2015 following a long battle with cancer and kidney failure.

He was the devoted husband of Jennifer Miller Knoll, whom he married on October 11, 1986. Together they raised three children. Alexander of Urbana, MD, Spencer of Washington, DC and Hanmei, at home.

Craig had two children from a previous marriage: Andrew (Shyrel) of Anchorage, AK and Matthew (Tammy) of Virginia Beach, VA. He also had five grandchildren: Cody, Ruth, Jonathan, Timothy and Lucas.

Born in Buffalo, NY on November 23, 1944, he was the son of Carl and Nancy Smith Knoll and the brother of Connee (Tyler) Hancock and Gary Knoll. He earned a B.A. degree from Towson State College and a M.Ed. from the University of Maryland. He was a humanitarian, who devoted his life-long career to serving troubled youth, learning-disabled children, people with intellectual challenges, the homeless and people living with mental illness – as a counselor, a teacher and a leader.

In his early life, he worked as a special education teacher and then served two terms as a delegate from Prince George's County in the Maryland Legislature from 1971 to 1978. From 1990 to 2011, he was the Executive Director of Threshold Services in Montgomery County. In 2011, that agency merged with St Luke's House to form Cornerstone Montgomery. Craig became the President and CEO of that organization which is the largest provider of mental health services in the county. He retired in 2012 due to illness.

Craig was a proud member of Open Door Metropolitan Community Church. He spent many years serving as a lay speaker in the United Methodist Church and frequently preaching at the Sunday worship services at College View Rehabilitation and Care Center in Frederick. He was preceded in death by his sister, Connee Hancock and his father, Carl Knoll.

A memorial service will be held at Open Door MCC at 15817 Barnesville Rd, Boyds, MD on Saturday, May 23 at 11 AM.
