According to the family history*, "Samuel learned the trade of a cabinet maker in Brattleboro, Vt. ; he did business in Rutland [Mass.] and Enfield [Mass., one of the Quabbin towns] till 1834, when he became an employee of Timothy Gilbert, piano maker, of Boston, and continued in his service till 1862, when he removed to Leominster. His convictions of moral and religious duties were very strong ; he joined the Congregational church in Enfield ; he was an ardent advocate of temperance and antislavery reform movements."

Samuel Boyden married Roxana Sawyer in Rutland, Mass. in 1825, and over the next twenty-five years, the couple had at least eight children. Only their second child, Merrill Norton Boyden and two daughters lived beyond childhood.

Boston City Street directories as early as 1839 give Samuel's occupation (in Boston) as a pianoforte maker. Piano manufacturing was a flourishing industry in Boston for much of the 19th century, with numerous firms.
