PORTLAND -- Arlene M. Jordan of Cape Elizabeth died unexpectedly on Saturday, Jan. 14, 2006, at Maine Medical Center.

Born in Farmingdale, Maine, she was the daughter of Emma Jack Longfellow and Lester W. Longfellow.

Valedictorian of her graduating class at Hallowell High School, she was later graduated by Gorham Normal School (later Gorham State Teachers College). She taught grades one through eight in a one-room schoolhouse in Houlton as well as teaching in Wales, Maine. Her next professional education job was in Cape Elizabeth, where she taught for a few years before marrying Leroy Maxwell on Sept. 7, 1947.

Roy and Arlene had four children before Arlene returned to teaching in 1966, again in Cape Elizabeth. She a well-loved kindergarten and first-grade teacher until her retirement in 1983.

Arlene was predeceased by her first husband, in 1972. She also was predeceased by sisters Esther Longfellow, in 1966; Ruth Longfellow Bruce, in 1976; and Ellen Longfellow, in 1991.

Arlene married Alvin E. Jordan on Jan. 4, 1980. Arlene and her husband enjoyed visiting with friends and family -- playing cards, celebrating birthdays and sharing countless meals. Arlene and Alvin also enjoyed traveling across the United States and around the world. Two of their favorite places were Alaska and Australia, though Arlene often said there was no more beautiful place in the world than Maine. Arlene, having grown up in a family that enjoyed nature and the outdoors, was both a devoted bird watcher and enthusiastic gardener. She was also an avid reader.

Arlene is survived by her husband, Alvin. She also is survived by her four children and two step-children; Marion Francis and Shirley Maxwell-Royall, both of Cape Elizabeth; Peter Maxwell, of Greene; William Maxwell, of Cumberland; Jodie Jordan of Cape Elizabeth; and Jill Maclean of Porter. In addition, she is survived by 16 grandchildren and step-grandchildren: Kayleigh Maxwell, Anderson Maxwell, Sarah Tarling, Liana Tarling, Dorian Tarling Sweeney, Justin Maxwell, Trevor Maxwell, Cayden Royall, Tucker Jordan, Caitlin Jordan, Casey Jordan, Lincoln Jordan, Samantha Wood, Elizabeth Wood, Jessica Royall and Victoria Royall. She is survived by two great-grandchildren, Liam Sweeney and Sage Maxwell. She also is survived by her two brothers; Alden Longfellow of Farmingdale and Lawrence Longfellow of Manchester.

Visiting hours will be held at Hobbs Funeral Home, 230 Cottage Road, South Portland. Visiting hours will be on Wednesday, Jan. 18, from 5 to 8 p.m. The funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Cape Elizabeth Methodist Church, 280 Ocean House Road, Cape Elizabeth. The interment will be in the spring at Seaside Cemetery in Cape Elizabeth.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Arlene's memory may be made to Thomas Memorial Library, 6 Scott Dyer Road, Cape Elizabeth, ME 04107.
