Etienne is the son of Pierre Gentes and Nicole Misignan. He was baptized in the St-Martin-sur-Renelle Parish of Rouen. He married Catherine Messier on 28 November 1678, in Notre-Dame-de-Montréal. They are the parents of the following (verified with PRDH):
1) Marie-Anne (abt 1679-1750) md (a) Pierre Burelle and (b) Jacques Danquel
2) Marguerite (1682-1763) md Pierre Fontaine dit Bienvenu
3) Marie-Angelique (1684-1748) md Jean-Baptiste Gauthier

On the censuses of 1666 and 1667, he was a domestic for d'Urbain Tessier.
