He served his country in the U. S. Air Force and was stationed at Walker Air Force Base.
He married May Belle Cole and they had 6 children together. They later divorced and up until her passing were good friends.
He was also preceded in death by two of his sons, Richard Lee and Leonard, Jr. and by one daughter Katherine Joan Wright and one grandson George Alan Bussey.
His mother, Iva and his step-father Clifford Ferguson also preceded him in death.
