A major player in Soviet politics in the 1960s and 70s. He was Head of the Agricultural Department of the Central Committee from 1964 until 1976. He was a member of the Politburo from 1971 until his death. Member of the Secretariat from 1965 until his death. He was a mentor to Mikhail Gorbachev and had impressed Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev significantly enough that many believed that he would be Brezhnev's successor. This was not to be as Kulakov died prior to Brezhnev. His cause of death was listed as natural causes but there are theories to the contrary. The lack of reaction of the Politburo to the news of his death and the absence of many Politburo members at his funeral lends credibility to these theories, particularly since all Politburo members were required to attend the funerals of their fellow members.
