Son of the late Johnson Elwood Bateman and Aileen Mitchell Phelps Bateman, he was preceded in death by a brother, Jerry Eddie Bateman, and by his stepmother, Agatha Bateman. He was survived by his wife, Ruby Mobley Bateman (married on January 24, 1959); four sons; six grandchildren; a sister, Elizabeth Brock; stepbrother; Ray Hassell; and an extended family of relatives and friends. His funeral was held at LifeBuilders Church of God in Williamston, NC, on May 1, 2015.
