Son of Edward Portlock Nash (~1811-?) and Susan Decatur Van Holt (~1815-bef 1853).

Brother of Captain Joseph Van Holt Nash (1834-1900), Confederate States of America Soldier, who married Margaret Bowden (?-?), Ella Robinson Nash (~1839-?) second wife of James B. Read (?-?), Susan Evelyn Nash (1843-1844), Louisa L. Nash (~1844-?) wife of William G. Lea (?-?), and Herbert P. Nash (?-bef 1868).

Grandson of Thomas Nash (~1758-~1824) Revolutionary War Soldier of Norfolk County, Virginia and Elizabeth Herbert (?-?).

He served as a private in the Norfolk County Patriots, Company F., 41st Virginia Regiment. He was discharged for disability. For more info, visit Norfolk County Patriots.

DIED. -- In this city on Sunday last, James Edward Nash in the 46th year of his age. Mr. Nash was a native of Petersburg, Va., son of the well known bookseller and stationer of that city, a graduate of the University of Virginia, a gallant soldier of the Confederate army and a courteous gentleman.

At the end of the war, Mr. Nash located in this city as one of the officers of the Southern Express Company, and has since been engaged here in various mercantile pursuits.

He was endowed with a courtly manner, a pleasing appearance, and possessed to a great extent those knightly ideas peculiar to a former era; he was active in every public measure, brave to a fault, and among those who knew him best, best liked.

His funeral took place from his late residence on Monday last, the services being conducted by Rev. E. M. Forbes.
