Brittain Clayton is a DAR Verified Patriot, Ancestor # A216265. Son of George Clayton & Barbara Glass.


Married first Sally unknown abt 1771-1772 in Virginia.


Married second Lucy Bailey on 13 Nov 1787 in Dobson Twp, Surry County, North Carolina. Note that in 1789, Stokes County was formed from Surry County.


After the death of their father George, brothers Brittain and Charles Clayton migrated to Surry County, North Carolina (later Stokes Co) where Brittain died. Brother Charles then migrated to Pendleton District, South Carolina and then Franklin County, Georgia where he died before 1803.


In the will of Brittain Clayton, written 8 Oct 1798 and proven March 1799 both in Stokes Co, NC, he named six children from his first marriage and six children from his second marriage. These twelve children are the only known children of Brittain.


After Brittain died, his children from his first marriage moved to various areas. His second wife Lucy and her children migrated to Bath County, KY. The death of Lucy was noted by The Division of the Slaves of the estate of "Brition Claton" dated 8 April 1816 in Bath County, KY, certified by William M Suddith, Deputy Clerk of Court. Lucy's six children and slaves were named in this document.

*NOTE: Both Brittain Clayton and his brother Charles 1738-1800 (wife Nancy Ann Love) each had a daughter named Elizabeth Clayton. Further, each brother named a daughter Elizabeth in his will, which has caused some confusion.


The husband of Elizabeth Clayton, daughter of Brittain Clayton, is unknown. She is NOT the Elizabeth who married Major Loggins.


Elizabeth Clayton 1772-1830, daughter of Charles Clayton 1738-1800 (Brittain's brother) and Nancy Ann Love, married Major Loggins on 22 Aug 1789, Surry County, North Carolina. Elizabeth's uncle Brittain Clayton was the bondsman in this marriage.

Further, Elizabeth Clayton Loggins was named as a deceased sister in the will of her brother, John Clayton 1774-1864 (also child of Charles Clayton and Nancy Ann Love), whose will was proven 6 Nov 1865 Will Book A Pgs. 258-260, Barstow Co. GA.
