The fourth son of Hon. John Kintzing Kane and Jane Duval Leiper; graduated Jefferson Medical College, 1855. He accompanied the relief expedition commanded by H. J. Harstein, sent to the Arctic to search for his brother, Dr. Elisha Kent Kane. Returning with his bother, he went with him to Cuba, remaining with Elisha until he died.
John spent a year in Paris, France, furthing his medical studies. During the Civil War, he served in a Union hospital in Cairo, Illinois and the government hospital in Chester, Pennsylvania, where he remained a year, attending to a private practice in Wilmington at the same time. In 1868, he was appointed surgeon of the Philadelphia, Wilmington and Baltimore railroad; in 1876 was commissioner of the Centennial Exhibition; in 1879 was elected president of the Delaware Medical Society. He died in Summit, N.J., after ten days' illness from erysipelas. John’s wife Mabel was the daughter of the Hon. James A. Bayard, to whom he married in 1863. Their children were Anne Francis, John Kintzing, Jean Duval Leiper, Florence Bayard, Elizabeth, James A. Bayard, John Kent, and Robert Van Rensselaer.
