The McAulay family, from whom Neel McAulay descended, came from the highlands of Scotland prior to the Revolutionary war. They settled in Mecklenburg Co., N. C., on McAlpin's Creek, near where Sardis church now stands. The great grandfather of the above mentioned Neel attained the wonderful age of 102 years.

Neel (Neill) McAulay, a son of Roderick and Margaret [née Black] McAulay, was born in the bounds of Sardis Presbyterian Church in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina on the 6th day of September 1805.
On January 12th 1832, Neel married Miss Melvina Blair Grier, a daughter of Robert and Mary [née Heard] Grier. This union was blessed with the following known children:

"Died in Iredell County, N. C., September 12th 1873, Mr. Neel McAuley, aged 63 years, after a confinement of several weeks. He was one of the fathers of the church, having served about forty seven years as a ruling elder in Coddle Creek congregation. His name is connected with the good days of olden time, and is associated with those of Boyce, Witherspoon, Grier, and many other great and good men who sprang up in Sardis congregation of Mecklenburg County, N. C. during the ministry of Rev. Isaac Grier. He left behind a widow, six daughters and three sons."
