She was the daughter of Arthur 'Art' Georgen (born Georgenthum) and Lucy Margaret Kley *Georgen. She was born 06 November 1926 St Louis, City, Missouri and died 10 February 2007 Belleville, St Clair County, Illinois.

CW4 Virgil Truman Akins, U.S. Army, retired, 72 of Belleville, Ill., died Tuesday, June 6, 1995, at his residence.

Mr. Akins was born on Nov. 15, 1922, on South Charles Street in Belleville, Ill., to Charles Robert and Edith Mae Akins, nee Voyles. His grandparents John Wesley Voyles and Lydia Jane Voyles, nee Davis, helped raise him. They preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by a baby brother, Buddy Akins.

Surviving are his wife, Mary Jane, nee Georgen, of Belleville, Ill., whom he married on Oct. 20, 1951, at St Piux X Catholic Church, Grand Ave, St Louis, MO; a daughter, Mary Edith Akins Jackson and her husband Michael Stephen Jackson of Freeburg, Ill.; a son Virgil Thomas Akins and wife Doreen Margueritte Steinwachs Akins of Battle Creek, Mich.; five grandchildren, Virgil Timothy Akins, Kimberly Doreen Akins and Audrey Kathleen Akins of Battle Creek, Mich., Mathias Creighton Jackson and Martina Lucy Jackson of Freeburg, IL. He was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Mahriah Edith Jackson of Freeburg, IL.

Also surviving are a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Arthur and Dorothy Georgen, nee Heine of Belleville, Ill.; nieces and nephews, Kathy Elsea, nee Georgen, Sarah Woolsey and Erick Woolsey of Belleville, Ill., Randy, Jancice nee Parker, Bradley and Michael Georgen of Belleville, Ill., Bob and Debbie Bruns, nee Georgen, Danny, Matthew, and Jared Bruns of Lamont, Ill.; Joe and Mary Joe Georgern, nee Peters, and Elena and Olivia Georgen of Lake Zurich, Ill.' an aunt, Alice Akins, nee Beske, of Belleville, Ill.; cousins George and Maxine, nee Akins, Schuette of Manchester, Tenn., Wendell and Dot, nee Schuette, Akins of Fairview Heights, Ill., Merle and Elsie Akins of Bainbridge Island, Wash., Mildred and Martell Davis of Jerseyville, Ill., Dave Davis of Granite City, Ill., and George and Nelda Ballard of Belleville, IL.

Chief Warrant Officer 4 Virgil T. Akins first entered the service of his country on May 11, 1943, at Fort Sheridan, Ill., and was a World War II and Korean War veterean. He served in Indai, and Burma during World War II and worked on the famous Burma Road during his two years in the Pacific Theater. He had a total of 41 years service in the U.S. Army, including active duty, Illinois National Guard and reserve service. He served as post adutant and survivors assistant officer at Fort McCoy, Wis., during the Vietnam War. He last served as an administrative supply technician at ARCOM in St. Louis, Mo., before his retirement.

He worked as a machinist at General Steel Castings in Granite City, Ill. as a young man. He also was a quality control inspector at McDonnell-Douglas Corp. in St Louis, Mo., having worked on the glass used in spacecraft and other projects. He also worked as a civil servant. He was a graduate of Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville, Ill., with a Bachelors of Arts in business administration. One of his last positions was as a substitute teacher in the Freeburg and Smithton grade schools.

Mr. Akins was very involved in many veteran and volunteer activities. He was a life member and past commander of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1739 Belleville, Ill., and Donald Meisenheimer Memorial Post 7074 Freeburg, Ill. He was Voice of Democracy chairman for Post 7074. He was the district adjutant in the VFW. He was also a member of the Hilgard American Legion Post of Belleville, Ill.

He spent many years of service in the Boy Scouts of America and was recently honored with the Pelican Award by the Catholic Committee on Scouting. He was a member of the Order of the Arrow, and received Wood Badge training. He was scoutmaster of troops at St Mary's Catholic Church, Belleville, Ill, St. Matthew's Methodist Church, Belleville, Ill., and St. John's Orphanage in Belleville, Ill. He served as commissioner to Boy Scout Troops in Smithton and at St Mary's Parish in Belleville. He was caretaker of Camp Ida Keck in Belleville for the Belleville Girl Scout Council, later River Bluffs. He served as an American Red Cross volunteer teaching first aid and CPR training. He was an avid fan of his grandchildren and all of their activities.

Funeral procession is to leave at 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 9, 1995, from George Renner & Sons Funeral Home, Belleville, Ill., to St Joseph's Catholic Church, Freeburg, Ill., for an 11 a.m. Mass of Christian Burieal with Fr. Henry Fischer and Fr. Jon O'Guinn officiating. Burial will be at 12:45 p.m. at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, St Louis, Mo.

Friends may call after 4 p.m. Thursday, June 8 at the funeral home.

A rosary prayer service will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, June 8 and a Veterans of Foreign Wars ritual will take place at 7 p.m. at George Renner & Sons Funeral Home, Belleville, Ill.
