Services for Dana W. Moore, 66, of Lubbock, TX, will be held at 10:00 am Friday, May 1, 2015, in the Abernathy First Baptist Church with Rev. Joel Perez officiating. Naval Graveside rites will follow in the Abernathy Cemetery under the direction of Abell Funeral Home & Flower Shop of Abernathy, TX. The family will gather at Abell Funeral Home to receive friends from 6:00 pm until 7:30 pm, Thursday, April 30th.
Mr. Moore died at his home, Monday, April 27, 2015.
He and his sister, Diana, were the first twins born, December 21, 1948, at Hi-Plains Hospital, Hale Center, TX. He attended Petersburg Elementary School before moving to the Abernathy school district in 1958. He graduated Abernathy High School in 1967 and enlisted in the U. S. Navy. He served with Training Squadron Twenty-Seven (VT-27) at Naval Air Station Corpus Christi, TX and Attack Squadron Ninety-Three (VA-93) at NAS Lemoore, CA. He was honorably discharged in 1971.
He attended court reporting school at Merriman Business College and worked in the private sector. He was a partner in a junior fuel dragster, BANZAI, which successfully competed in NHRA Division 5, IHRA and AHRA events. In 1976, he re-enlisted in the U. S. Navy for duty with Heavy Reconnaissance Squadron Nine (RVAH-9) in Key West, FL. Subsequent tours of duty were in NAS Cecil Field, FL, as a member of Air Anti-Submarine Squadron Twenty-Two, embarked in U.S.S. Saratoga (CV-60) with Carrier Air Wing Three, which deployed twice to the Mediterranean Sea. Other duty assignments were performed at NAS Corpus Christi, Operations Maintenance Division as the maintenance supervisor for the personal aircraft of Chief of Naval Air Training, Rear Admiral Peter Booth.
Subsequent duties sent him to Helicopter Mine Countermeasures Squadron Fourteen (HM-14) at NAS Norfolk, VA, in April 1984, Naval Aviation Maintenance Training Detachment 1031 for instructor duty in May 1988, and back to HM-14 for his final assignment, June 1991, prior to retiring with 20 years active duty, on March 31, 1993. In his career, he deployed twice to the Mediterranean/Tyrranean Sea and Persian Gulf, made cruises to the Caribbean, Indian Ocean, Eastern Pacific, Gulf of Suez, Red Sea and transited the international date line, the equator, the Suez Canal, the Straits of Gibraltar, Straits of Messina, and the Straits of Hormuz. He served onboard Saratoga (CV-60), USS Tripoli (LPH-10), USS Guadalcanal (LPH-7), USS Inchon (LPH-9) and was on detachments to USS Raleigh and USS Shreveport. He was awarded the Navy Achievement Medal by the Commander of the Sixth Fleet, Navy Unit Commendation (3 awards), Meritorious Unit Commendation (3), Battle "E" (4), Good Conduct Medal (4), National Defense Medal (2) and the Humanitarian Service Medal.
He moved back to Lubbock and married his high school sweetheart, Cindy Garvin in June 13, 1993, in Abernathy, she preceded him in death December 4, 2013.
Moore enrolled at South Plains College in 1995 and graduated with an Associate of Arts in 1996. He transferred to Texas Tech University and received a B. A. in Psychology, Cum Laude, in 1998. He was a member of Psi Chi, the National Honor Society in Psychology, Golden Key National Honor Society, a charter member of the Wolves Car Club, Veterans of Foreign Wars (at large), the Good Sam Club and Northside Baptist Church in Abernathy.
He is survived by a son, Will Calfin and a daughter Amanda Leonard, both of Lubbock, TX, two sisters, Diana Phillips of Taylor, TX and Janet Wilke of Abernathy, several nieces, a nephew, and his parents, Martin and Dorothy Moore of Abernathy.
