She was born in Cortland on March 24, 1947 to the late William Henry and Mary Elizabeth (Graham) O'Brien.
She graduated from Cortland High School in 1965. She was employed with the Cortland County Dept. of Social Services for 23 years, holding several positions. In 1989, she took a position as Chief Clerk of Cortland County Family Court and remained there until her retirement in 2002. While in her retirement, Kay enjoyed spending time with family and friends going out to lunch/dinner, and playing cards with her girlfriends.
Kay was a longtime communicant of St. Margaret's Church in Homer.
She is survived by the "light of her whole life", her daughter, Tammy Alger Reed and her husband, Howie, of Homer; her brother, William “Red” O'Brien and his wife, Cynthia of Groton; several nieces, nephews, cousins, many special friends and her beloved poodle, Dutchess.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 11, 2015 in St. Margaret’s Church, 14 Copeland Ave., Homer, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Rev. Paul Alciati. Interment in St. Mary’s Cemetery will follow.
In keeping with Kay’s wishes, there will be no calling hours.
