John Crabb was the son of Stephen Crabb (1778-1858) and Mary (Smith) Crabb (1788- c.1860). She was the daughter of William Smith, this confirmed by DNA testing in May 2013 at FTDNA.

He married Sarah Jane Snipes on Aug. 13, 1846 in Limestone County, Alabama.

He had cut fencepost on a day when light rain fell that afternoon and went to bed that evening with a cold. His death was the result of pneumonia a few days later. Little Giles Allen Crabb, his grandson and son of Samuel C Crabb, is buried beside him.
