Mike Phillips, 59, of Madisonville passed away, Saturday April 25, 2015 at his residence in Madisonville.

Mr. Phillips was born March 24, 1956 in Manchester, OH, to the late Katherine Timko Phillips and the late Mike Phillips.

He was a member of Victory Church. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and golfing. He loved working with kids.

He was a two-time Class AA Player of the Year and a high school All-American.

For the next four years, Phillips played college basketball at the University of Kentucky, where he was the starting center on the 1978 national championship team.
During his career at UK, he averaged 11.4 points and 6.3 rebounds per game.

Former UK coach Joe B. Hall told the Lexington Herald-Leader that Phillips was courageous and a “gentle giant.”
New Jersey drafted Phillips with the 45th overall pick in 1978, but he never played in the NBA. He did play 13 seasons in Spain, averaging about 23 points and nine rebounds per game, and won a league championship in 1981.
In 1994, Phillips was inducted into the Summit County Sports Hall of Fame.

He is survived by his wife, Candice Austin Phillips of Madisonville; one son, Michael Charles Phillips, Jr., of Madisonville; and one cousin, Cindy Zultowski of Florida.

Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Friday, May 1, 2015 at Victory Church with Rev. Kris Goodman, Joe B. Hall, Jack Givens, and Bro. Roy Ellis officiating. Burial will follow after the service.

Visitation will be from 5:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. Thursday and from 9:00 A.M. until service time on Friday at the church.

Pallbearers will be James Lee, Rick Robey, Jack Givens, Tripp Ramsey, Jay Shidler, Tim Stephens, and Fred Cowan. Honorary pallbearers will be Scott Courts, Truman Clayton, Lavon Williams, Jim Andrews, Mike Murphy, Toby Sosby, Kyle Macy, Chris Gettlefinger, Don Sullivan, Chuck Alexinas, Rob Bolton, Larry Johnson, Marion Haskins, and Duane Casey.

Memorial contributions may be made to Rachel's Rewards c/o Hanson Elementary School at 121 East Lawn Road, Hanson, KY 42413. Envelopes will be made available
