MABEL HOCHENEDEL ALLEN
Mabel Hochenedel Allen, of Louisburg, North Carolina, died at her Sons home, April 29, 2015. She was born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, on June 22, 1922 to Jane Elizabeth Chauvin Hochenedel an artist and designer, and Benjamin Franklin Hochenedel a sugar chemist. After her father died in 1924, her mother remarried William Elliott Jones in 1928, who worked in the sugar industry for Southdown Plantation. The family moved to Crescent Farm Plantation, Houma, La. Mabel was educated at Lorton Preparatory School and Terrebonne High School. She attended Saint Mary's College in Raleigh, NC. From there she studied Art at Tulane University, G. Sophie Newcomb College, in New Orleans, where she received a Bachelor of Fine Arts on May 31, 1944. She was a member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority. After graduation, she helped with the War effort, drafting in an aircraft facility.
After WWII she met Carroll W. Allen, and they were married in October of 1945. They had two Children, Adria Hale Allen and Benjamin Hamilton Allen. Mabel Moved to Louisburg, NC, in 1967. She worked in the Franklin Co. School system teaching art. After retiring she continued teaching and painting from her home. She became widely known for her Watercolor paintings and sketches, her ability to capture the essence of a scene or subject, with just minimal strokes of a brush or pen was always amazing! She was very generous with her art giving many painting to family and friends or whomever came to visit.
Mabel, moved in with her son Ben and daughter-in-law Ellen, May of 2013 where she lived until her death. Mabel's daughter Adria passed away in January of 2012, and her granddaughter, Alexa Moore passed away in August of 2013. Mabel had two sisters, Betty Mckinne of Louisburg, NC, and Jane Johnston of Jackson, MS. both deceased. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Ben H. and Ellen R. Allen; grandson, John B. Allen; granddaughter, Michelle Alston of Raleigh, N.C. and granddaughter, Wendy Pierce-Stephens; and numerous great-grandchildren.
