James Harlan Hockett, 85, of Castle Rock passed away April 4, 2010.

He was born Dec. 14, 1924, in Satanta, Kan., and spent his early years working on farms and ranches in southwest Kansas.

Jim served in the Army during World War II in Europe. He was captured by the Germans and spent six months in a prison camp working on railroads which had been bombed by the allies. He was liberated in the fall of 1945. After being discharged, Jim returned to Kansas and married his childhood sweetheart, Veda Mae Owens. They recently celebrated 64 years of marriage. In 1953 they moved to Longview where Jim worked in the lumber mills. He retired from Weyerhaeuser in 1988 after 34 years.

Jim grew up with horses and always made sure his children had horses in their lives. Jim and Veda were instrumental in helping many local youth get started in rodeo and roping events. In the mid-1950's he met Dick Walker, a Native American cowboy. They spent many weekends chasing and capturing wild horses in Central Washington.

Jim is survived by his wife, Veda in Castle Rock; three sons, Gary (Kathy), Terry (Mary) and Harry "Coon" (Jenny); two daughters, Jody (Ron) Kautz and Mary "Coke" Bolar; 11 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Myrtle Marie of Tualatin, Ore.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Everett and Mary Mayhieu Hockett; four brothers, Arthur, Edwin, Ervin and Alvin; and a sister, Ethel.

A memorial service for Jim will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Castle Rock Christian Church.

The family requests memorial contributions be made to the Hospice Care Center for all they have done to help.

Arrangements are entrusted to the care of Hubbard Funeral Home.
