Francis was the son of Mann Page and Judith Page Nelson Page. He was born at the family home Greenland, in Gloucester Co., VA. Married Susan Duval 25 Feb 1851 at Fort Smith, Sebastian Co., Arkansas.

Francis Nelson Page was born on October 28th, 1820, in Greenland, Gloucester County, Virginia, the son of Mann Page and Judith Nelson, he was raised in Virginia, in 1836 he obtained an appointment to the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York, from the State of Virginia. He entered the Military Academy as a Cadet on September 1st, 1836, and continued in his courses until he graduated 42nd in his class on July 1st, 1841, and received his appointment as a Brevet Second Lieutenant of Infantry with the 7th United States Regiment of Infantry on July 1st, 1841.
He received his promotion to Second Lieutenant of Infantry on October 39th, 1841, and was serving in Florida being engaged in the War against the Seminole Indians and on duty at Fort Pickens, Florida, from 1841 to 1843. Then being assigned to duty at Baton Rouge, Louisiana, from 1843 to 1844, going for a short time to Pass Christian, Mississippi, in 1844, and then returning to at Baton Rouge, remaining there from 1844 to 1845. He served as the as Regimental Adjutant of the 7th Regiment of Infantry from October 25th, 1845, to May 13th, 1847, during which time war broke out between the United State and Mexico and he was sent with his Regiment to Texas. He was present at the Defense of Ft. Brown,
Texas, from May 3rd to 8th 1846, and for his actions there was brevetted to the rank of First Lieutenant on May 9th, 1846, for gallant conduct. He was promoted to First Lieutenant of Infantry on August 22nd, 1846, and on May 13th, 1847, was appointed as a Brevet Captain & Assistant Adjutant General in the United States Army, and would serve as such for the remainder of his career in the Army. He was engaged in the Battle of Contreras, on August 19th & 20th, 1847, the Battle of Churubusco on August 20th, 1847, for his actions in those battles he was brevetted to the rank of Major on August 20th, 1847, for gallant and meritorious conduct. He engaged and was wounded in the Storming of Chapultepec on September 13th, 1847, was present in the assault and capture of the City of Mexico on September 13th and 14th, 1847, and served as the Assistant Adjutant General of Brigadier General James Shields's Brigade from 1847 to 1848.
Following the Mexican War he served as the Assistant Adjutant General of several military departments in Arkansas, Missouri, and Florida, from February of 1850 to March of 1860, it was during this time that he vacated his appointment as a First Lieutenant with the 7th Regiment of Infantry and became. On February 25th, 1851, he was married to Miss Susan Duval, the daughter of Colonel William Duval, of Florida on February 25th, 1851, and the couple had five children (Francis Nelson Jr., Lucy Nelson, Powhatan Randolph, Kate Rector, and Elias Rector). In September of 1858 he was appointed as the Assistant Adjutant General of the 7th Military Department and reported to the department headquarters at Fort Smith, Arkansas, where he would remain on duty until March 25th, 1860, when he died at Fort Smith at the age of 41.
